Ganghwa-gun, promoted 'Indoor tourist attraction development project'
Total project cost of 2 billion won to be completed by the end of 2020

Currently, the biggest immediate goal of local governments in Korea is financial
independence. This is because the reality is that domestic local governments are relying
on local grants provided by the state to lead local administrations, with the degree of
financial independence of most of them rising or falling by 30-40%.
◆ 'Financial independence' is the top challenge for local governments
In order for local governments to increase their financial independence, above all, they
must activate the local economy. This is because local governments' finances can be
strengthened only when the income from outside is increased. As a solution, “stay-type
tourism,” which attracts foreign tourists to stay in the region and spends more money on sightseeing and purchasing specialty products, is emerging.
In this regard, Incheon-si Ganghwa-gun (Mayor : Cheon-Ho Yoo) is actively promoting the
'indoor tourist attraction development project' under the theme of 'Market Street in the
Goryeo Era' to revitalize the original downtown of Ganghwa-eup and develop new t
ourism resources in the region.
The core of this project is to create a complex cultural experience space where people can experience food, refreshments, clothing rentals, and lifestyle by remodeling the old Ewha
Textiles building to recreate the “Korean marketplace”. Ganghwa-gun announced the
winning design competition for this on June 18th 2020.
Ganghwa-gun has received two contests and deliberated, and as a result, the design
proposal submitted by Id Architects Co., Ltd. was selected as the winning work. In this
design competition, the winners will be given design service rights for the Goryeo
Marketplace Project.
◆ The “Indoor tourist destination” can Welcome tourists Regardless of the weather
The 'Korea Marketplace Creation Project' remodels an existing building with a site area of 1940㎡ and a building area of 610㎡ in the area of 878 Gwancheong-ri, Ganghwa-eup,
and is used as a base tourism resource in connection with existing nearby tourist
attractions such as Sochang Experience Center, Choyang Textile, and Donggwang Textile
Develop. A total project cost of 2 billion won will be invested in this project, which is
scheduled for completion by the end of 2020.
Mayor Cheon-Ho Yoo said, "We will attract more tourists to the original city through the 'Korea Marketplace Creation Project', which will become a new landmark along with
existing tourism facilities such as Sochang Experience Center and Chaoyang Textile," and
said, "We will continue to do our best to revitalize the original city. I will."
It is expected that the “indoor tourism development project” will have the same effect as developing indoor tourism resources like Lotte World. Therefore, it is expected that the
'indoor tourist attraction creation project' that can welcome tourists regardless of the
weather will spread to local governments nationwide.
It can be said that it is natural for local governments nationwide to focus their attention
on the “Korea Era Market Street” project promoted by Ganghwa-gun.
