Overview of the Project

The church is a representative religious building and a medium that connects the world of religion with the world of the human world. Therefore, it is no wonder that the church is

built as a container for the souls of the saints, clean and solemn, but in a loving image

that embraces people.

Nevertheless, it is not easy to find a church that looks like this around us. It may be

because the direction that the Korean church has been aiming for has wanted to stand

solemnly and loftily in the position of the saints who has passed away.

However, Saemoonan Church, located in 79, Saemoonan-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Korea

completed in March 2019, is a step back from the stereotype of this Korean church.

Instead, it shows the saints's desire to greet and hug all people from all over the world.

Saemoonan Church was founded in 1885, by Pastor Horace Grant Underwood (1859 ~

1916), the first Korean church to be founded on September 27, 1886.

Saemoonan Church has been serving as the mother church of Korea for over 130 years

since its founding, as a church that is deeply rooted in faith, a spirit of mission, a

pioneering role in church unity, and a nation responsible for the development of

national history.

In the meantime, several new churchs were built. The new church, completed in March last year, is the sixth church built by Saemoonan Church celebrating its 132th anniversary.
The new synagogue of Saemoonan Church was completed in March 2019, with a

construction period of about 3 years and 6 months since construction started in 2015. It

was completed with 5 stories underground and 13 stories above ground. The height of

the building is about 68m, and the total area is 8,962 pyeong. The main hall has a seating capacity of 2,840.

The design project of the new Saemoonan Church was handled by Professor Eun-Seok Lee of Kyung Hee University. Professor Eun-Seok Lee worked on the design project of the

Saemoonan Church for a period of nearly 10 years with the Seoinn Design Group

(CEO : Dong-Gyu Choi).

Meanwhile, the newly built Saemoonan Church was selected as the winner of the ‘2019

Architecture Master Award(AMP)’ in the architectural design field.

AMP was instituted in 1985 by the Farmani Group, a professional company that hosts

international design projects in Los Angeles, USA. The award announces award-winning

architectural projects from around the world every year.

AMP said about Saemoonan Church, "It is well known as the Korean Mother Church(Notre Dame in Korea), and the wall of the curved surface resembles a mother holding a child."

Lighting Design Concept

The highlight of the Saemoonan Church is the magnificent appearance of the grand

chapel. The grand chapel located on the 4th to 7th floors was designed with high wattage LED downlights because of the wide and high ceiling, and the indirect lighting was placed on the overlapping ceiling to emphasize the flow of the layers.

Recessed spotlight lighting was installed on the upper ceiling where the cross was located to visually highlight the cross, while symbolizing the sacredness and peace(pigeon form)

through the shadow.

In order to create a meaningful shadow of the cross, the installation location of the light

and the beam angle and wattage of the lighting fixture were considered.

The shape of the large pipe organ located on the right side of the cross was entirely

reflected to maximize the glossy texture of the metal. In the event of the event, the stage and the target space of the river were controlled through the intense stage lighting, and

the relative brightness of the light was adjusted and the hierarchy of light was given.

The feeling of the cross in the lobby and multi-purpose auditorium located on the first

basement to the second basement makes the shape of the cross appear subdued by

indirect lighting unlike the large chapel. Also, during the event, the copper wire used as

the Virgin Road showed light that led the way to the cross through the upper indirect and moving lights.

On the first floor, the citizen open cafe is entirely finished in calm wood and brick. By

utilizing the patterns and textures of these finishes as much as possible, it made users feel psychologically godly and stable.

Saemoonan Church needs a suitable atmosphere for each space and various scenes, such as pious feeling, lively feeling, and calm feeling, depending on the purpose of use of

different light environments and spaces.
